Made in New Zealand from recycled, plastic-free materials, our guards — also called tree guards, plant protection products, or a biodegradable alternative to corflute guards — break down naturally and compost over time, good for your plants and good for the whenua.

Built to Perform in Real Conditions
Our guards are built to handle New Zealand’s toughest planting sites — wind, browsing animals (rabbits, hares and possums), herbicide spray, and exposed, steep or windswept terrain.
Our guards are made with solid sides — no holes or vents — acting as a true spray shield or spray guard. Most plastic guards act like a mini hot house, letting light in all round, encouraging weed growth right alongside your seedling, and trapping enough heat to scorch the plant on a hot day. Cardboard guards with holes in the sides have the opposite problem — they let spray straight through and are easily torn apart by pests like pūkeko. Ours have solid sides with no holes: light gets in at the top only, forcing the seedling to grow upward, and once it fills the guard, weed growth inside drops right off. Being 100% biodegradable, there’s no plastic residue and no return trip needed to collect them. After years of experience and hundreds of thousands of plants in the ground, we’ve learned solid sides is the way to go.
At Te Mamaku Native Corridor we’ve used more than 39,000 cardboard plant guards from Plant Guards NZ. Our overall survival rate is 90%+, even years on — the quality of the guards is a big part of that.

Where It All Began
Plant Guards NZ began while coordinating a large-scale native restoration project in the Moutere. We couldn’t find a biodegradable plant guard that combined good design, durability and affordability — so we developed one ourselves: EcoShield Pro. Other landowners, catchment groups and restoration projects soon started asking where they could get them too, and Plant Guards NZ grew from there.
